Dementia Tip: Connect, Not Correct

connect-dontcorrectThis week, we bring you a Dementia Tip from Dr Lisa Gunderson: “connect, not correct”. When speaking to someone with dementia, it’s sometimes impulsive to correct them with the facts, but this can be confusing and not helpful to the individual. Instead, focus on their feelings and provide reassurance.

Try not to dispute things that your elderly loved one with dementia says. It can be alarming and upsetting at times to be told that they are wrong, and then told a confusing alternative. Your goal is to always provide reassurance and comfort.
