Recent research has suggested that aerobic activity (cardio) contributes to brain growth for individuals who have minor cognitive impairments, particularly in older women. Performing cardiovascular exercise as little as twice a week over an extended period of time can produce significant growth in hippocampus region of the brain.
What this means:
For elderly who suffer from minor cognitive impairments, such as dementia, incorporating aerobics into their lifestyle may achieve some benefits. For individuals at risk of developing a minor cognitive impairment, starting an aerobic routine as a proactive measure could stave off degeneration.
Cardio Exercise for Brain Health:
Perform aerobic exercise for at least 45 minutes, 3 times a week. This could be a class at the gym, jogging, swimming, cycling, dancing, or anything else that will get your heart rate up and your lungs working. Note that the recommended amount is only a minimum.
Not just good for your body – but good for your brain!
